Is your Job Search getting stressful? It’s important to know that stress is more of a mindset that’s been given to you, but with some intentional redirection, you can conquer it. This blog originated from a video that’s posted on our YouTube Channel; here’s a quick link to this video https://youtu.be/V6GaMA1ThlU
I’ll start by sharing an important thought with you I learned from a presentation given by Dr. Valencia Ray years ago that truly changed the way I cope with stress. She studies how the mind affects the body. She said,
“Stress begins with thoughts, and thoughts are controllable.”
Wow, right? But where we start to lose control is when we have those thoughts over and over again, and then we attach actions to those thoughts, and they become unconscious thoughts.
Like when you very first learned to drive a car. You sat down in the driver’s seat with your eyes wide open with possibility. You checked your mirrors. You put your hands at 10 and 2. You put your seatbelt on. Then you slowly started on your way down the road.
Then you did it again and again and again, and before you know it, you’re eating a sandwich while you’re driving, one hand on the wheel, maybe just a knee, and you don’t have to think about putting your seatbelt on when you get in the car anymore because it’s automatic; you it down and the seatbelt goes on.
What we don’t realize is that this is happening in the rest of our daily lives as well.We have the media pounding us with negative information daily, telling us why life is so hard right now. Have you ever noticed how when anything slightly bad happens the media has to share how long it’s been since the last time something like that has happened? “It’s hasn’t been this bad since 2004!” What are we supposed to do with that information? That just doesn’t help us to be so focused on the negative.
As a result, we create negative automations in our own lives that create unnecessary stress. When something bad happens, and our focus is put onto how bad it is and how long it’s been since it was this bad. Then we go into this poor me mentality, and we start thinking we can’t fix the problem. Then because we THINK we can’t, then we don’t, and then we spend the rest of the day posting our problems on facebook telling our friends how bad things are, INSTEAD of focusing our energy on fixing the problem!!
When this routine of events happens over and over again, just like the car, when you sit down and the seatbelt goes on, in the same way, as soon as the bad thing happens the post is already out on facebook, we don’t even think about it anymore.
Today let’s start retaining our minds and find ways to open our eyes wide with possibility again. When something bad happens, instead of following the old path, now view that “bad thing” as a challenge, and start looking for ways to overcome that challenge. When you beat it, THEN go to Facebook and LinkedIn to share the story with your friends on how you beat that problem, and inspire your friends.
Make yourself a promise that you’ll never post about a negative event until after you’ve beaten it.
I think you’ll be shocked at how many more referrals of job leads you start getting from your friends when you do that, and how attracted employers are to positive attitudes. Give this a try, start today.
